Speeches and feedback

We did our speeches in small groups today, giving each other feedback using Google forms. Each learner decided what they wanted feedback on based on what they felt they needed to work on the most.

Book Character Parade

We had our annual book character parade today...great effort on the costumes Room 25!

Rise...painting to music

As part of our Olympic inquiry we have been listening to Katy Perry's song Rise - the unofficial Olympic Games song.

We listened to the tone, dynamics and rhythm in the song. We imagined the what the music might look like if we were to paint it.

While listening to the music we let our black paint dance across the paper - creating a visual representation of the song.

We discussed that a painting has many layers and that there are no such things as mistakes in art..as Adam Scott once said "creativity is about making mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep". We are currently learning to take risks with our creativity and problem solve the mistakes we don't want to keep.

Today we began to add some colour based on the changing mood we personally experience with the song. The learners were taught how to blend to create a change in tone and colour. Tomorrow when our paintings are dry we will experiment with some "dry" brush painting.

We hope to have our paintings finished by Friday.

Blogging with Room 12

Today while the year 6's visited Blockhouse Bay Intermediate the year 5's collaborated with the Room 12 year 5's.

We discussed the Olympic spirit and how the New Zealand athlete Nikki Hamblin embodied this during her 5000m heat early this morning. The year 5's were asked to think about the Olympic Creed and the message it sends to not only the Olympic athletes, but to us as learners.

At the end of the discussion and sharing learners reflected on their own struggles with learning and wrote a reflection.

Ms Laxa taught the year 5's how to post their google slide reflection onto their blogs.

Hopefully the year 5's went home to share this with their families.

Olympic Parade

We held our own New Windsor School Olympic parade today.

Each class was given the choice of the country they would represent...New Zealand was quickly snapped up and we ended up with South Africa.

We talked about South Africa and how we as a class would be able to represent them. We talked about how their flag had changed and the reasons for this. We discovered that their sporting colours were different from their flag - but not as different as New Zealand's.

We decided that we'd try to wear yellow and green, create a flag and make a lion mask in the colours we were going to wear.

We discovered that New Windsor School didn't have a South African flag...WHAT WERE WE GOING TO DO! Some quick problem solving and collaboration solved that problem - we'd make our own. Thanks you Ms Corbett for bringing a flag to school that we could also fly on a pole!

Strike Percussion visits NWS

We were entertained by the rythme and beats of three talented musicians from Strike Percussion … Mr T, Jimbo the nimbo and Muzza. They showed us how to use a range of tuned and unturned percussion instruments to create music.

They played the drum tower, a giant marimba, assorted bells and symbles as well as Polynesian drums.

We also got to participate in the performance by creating a tropical rain storm using body percussion - we rubbed hands clicked fingers, and stomped our feet. Some of us were lucky enough to play with Strike Percussion!
